Review of ‘Mujib: The Making of A Nation’: Shyam Benegal’s Film, with Good Intentions, Faces Significant Challenges

There’s a wealth of information out there about the historical figures of India and Pakistan like Nehru and Jinnah, especially in books and movies. The partition, the birth of Pakistan, and the Hindu-Muslim conflicts during that time have been extensively portrayed in cinema. However, the history of Bangladesh, a country born out of the same events, has often been overlooked in films. Shyam Benegal’s latest movie, “Mujib: The Making of A Nation,” sheds light on the lesser-known history of Bangladesh and its influential leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Sheikh Mujib’s role in shaping Bangladesh is significant, yet not widely recognized. The film, with Arifin Shuvoo portraying Mujib, traces his journey from his school days to his involvement in politics, showcasing the events that led to East Pakistan’s independence. Through a straightforward narrative and Renu (Nusrat Imrose Tisha) as the narrator, the film delves into Mujib’s struggles and his vision for a free Bangladesh. Backed by both the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation and the National Film Development Corporation of India, the movie aims to provide a comprehensive look at Bangladesh’s history and Mujib’s pivotal role in it.

The portrayal of Mujib in terms of production quality falls short, with evident limitations in set locations and visual effects. The film’s overall appearance lacks the finesse expected, especially considering the current standard of acclaimed Bangladeshi cinema. It’s disheartening to witness a biopic on such a significant figure being presented with subpar quality, particularly when helmed by the esteemed Shyam Benegal. While Mujib: The Making Of Nation aims to educate about a lesser-known historical figure, the execution could have been more engaging and visually appealing. A biopic backed by two nations should have prioritized quality over quantity, emphasizing better production values and writing to truly honor the subject.
